An assistant coach for San Antonio Spurs of NBA Becky Hammon was born on 11th March 1977 in Rapid City, South Dakota, U.S. She is also a professional basketball playerfor the San Antonio Stars of the Women’s National Basketball Association.As a child, she was born as Rebecca Lynn Hammon to Martin and Bev Hammon. Becky also has a brother named Matt and a sister named Gina. She attended Stevens High Scholl where she played the high school basketball. She was South Dakota Miss Basketball as a child. After averaging 26 points, 4 rebounds and 5 steals per game, she was voted as the South Dakota Player of the Year in her senior year.
The same year, she was also voted as female class athlete by her graduating class. Later, she got graduated in 1999 with a degree in exercise and sport science from Colorado State University. There, she was a prolific scorer. In the 1998-99 season, she led her team to a 33-3 record which helped them advance to the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet Sixteen.For the same season, she was named the WAC Mountain Division Player of the Year and exceeded the player Keith Van Horn of University of Utah as the WAC’s all-time leading scorer.
She was inducted into the Colorado State University Sports Hall of Fame on 12th November 2004. Her #25 Colorado State jersey was retired at the Moby Arena on 22nd January 2005.During the WNBA Draft on 4rth April 2007, Hamman was traded to the Silver Stars. In the year, she had her best season of her career. She posted high average of 18.8 ppg and 5.0 apg. While her time in San Antonio, she earned a nickname “Big Shot Becky” which was because of her ability to hit shots in clutch moments. In the year 2008, Hamman joined the Russian national team.
Former Team USA coach Anne Donovan criticized her for her decision.She became the seventh player in WNBA history on 31st August 2011 who scored 5000 points. She made the great decision which was a great opportunity for her to get to the Olympics Games. Since then, she has played for Russia at Eurobasket in 2009, the World Championship in 2010 and the Olympics in the year 2012. Hammon suffered from tore of her left anterior cruciate ligament on 13th July 2013 in a game against the Los Angeles Sparks.
After that, she announced on 23rd July that she will retire at the end of the 2014 season. Later, on 5th august of the same year, she was hired for NBA’s San Antonio Spurs as an assistant coach. The USA team which was coached by Nell Fortner won all the five games as well as also earned the gold medal for the competition. Over the five games, Hammon scored 18 points. In addition, Becky Hamman became the second female NBA assistant coach after Lisa Boyer to work part time on the staff of the Cleveland Cavaliers while serving as head coach of the WNBA’s Cleveland Rockers.
