A Croatian football player Dejan Lovren was born on 5th July 1989 in Zenica, SFR Yugoslavia, present-day Bosnia and Herzegovina. He plays as a defender for Liverpool in the Premier League and for the Croatian national team. When the Yugoslav civil wasr began in 1990s, Lovern’s and his family made the decision to escape to Munich. He was at the age of three when his family fled Yugoslavia and they spent the next seven years in Germany. Later, the family had to return as they did not possess necessary documentations. They then settled down in Karlovac, Croatia which is 50 kilometers southwest of the capital city of Zagreb.
At the beginning of his youth career, Lovren joined top fight club GNK Dinamo Zagreb in the year 2004. He played for the club until 2006. The same year he was offered to sign a four years professional contract. He sccepted the club’s offer and on 10th June, he debuted for the senior squad of Dinamo in a Prva HNL match against Inter Zapresic. He was loaned to Inter Zapresic in 17th July 2007 for two seasons so that he could gain some experience and game practice.
He was then immediately included in the first team of the temporary club. There, he played 50 matches and score one goal in two seasons. After returning from the loan, Lovren played regularly for the Dinamo. He appeared in 38 matches and bagged three goals. In addition, he was also featured in all four UEFA Champions League qualifiers against Pyunik Yerevan and Red Bull Salzburg.
Lovren then moved for French Ligue 1 club called Olympique Lyon. In January of 201, he signed for €8 million plus €1.5 million in incentives on a four and half year contract. He made his competitive debut there on 24th January 2010. The same year in November, Lovren was listed in the Don Balon list of the 100 best young players in the world. On 23rd January, he extended his contract for two more seasons with Lyon. He signed with the French club until the year 2016.
Dejan joined Southampton of the English Premier League on 14th June 2013 signing a four deal for an undisclosed fee. It was estimated at £8.5 million. He made his debut on 17th August. He scored his first goal for Southampton on 21st September 2013 which was against Liverpool at Anfield. The Loverpool Echo reported on 25th July 2014 that the Southampton had agreed a fee with Liverpool for the sale of Lovren. Lovren was then transferred to join Liverpool on 27th July 2014.
He was the third Southampton player that was transferred to Liverpool after Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana. He signed a four year contract which cost the club an apparent fee of £20 million. It was announced on 28th July that his squad number would be 6 which was previously won by Liverpool legends such as Alan Hansen, and Emlyn Hughes. Apart from that, Dejan also plays for Croatian national team. He was called-up to Croatian national team by manager Slaven Bilic in 2009.
He debuted for the team in the year 2009. He was also capped 48 times in the various Croatia youth national teams and also scored four goals. Lovren scored his first international goal in 2nd September 2011 which was against in a UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying match. He was also included in a preliminary 23-man squad for UEFA Euro 2012 but had to withdraw due to the injury just one week before the tournament.
He scored his second goal for Croatia on 26th March 2013 in a 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Wales at Liberty Stadium in Swansea. On May of 2014, Dejan Lovren was named in a 30-man squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
