An English professional golf player Luke Donald was born on 7th December 1977 in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, England. He plays mainly on the U.S. based PGA Tour but he is also a member of the European Tour. He has been the World Number One. As a child, he was named as Luke Campbell Donald. Luke attended Rudolf Steiner School in Kings Langley. Later, he went to Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe.
In the year 1997, Luke took a golf scholarship at Northwestern University. There, he studied art theory and practice and then became a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He won the individual NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship men’s title in 1999 when he beat the score record formerly held by Tiger Woods. Donald turned professional in 2001.
The next year, he won the rain-shortened Southern Farm Bureau Classic and became only the 11th rookie in PGA Tour history to earn more than $1 million in his first season. He won the Omega European Masters and the Scandinavian Masters in 2004 on the European Tour. He also became the member of the victorious European Ryder Cup team the same year. He also won the WGA-World Cup for England in partnership with Paul Casey.
Luke’s biggest win came in February 2011 when he defeated the German Martin Kaymer 3&2 in the final at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship. The same year in May, he won the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club which made him number one golfer in the Official World Golf Ranking. In the year 2013, on Japan Golf Tour, he defeated his title at the Dunlop Phoenix cruising to a six shot victory over the field.
Prior to that, Donald is also an amateur artist. One of his oil paintings was auctioned by the PGA Tour for charity in 2002. To talk about his personal life, Luke Donald is married to Diane Antonopoulos. He met her while attending Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Luke proposed her in June of 2006. They got married on 24th June, 2007 in Santorini, Greece. The couple has three children together: Elle, Sophia and Georgina. Donald and his wife, both are avid collectors of contemporary art.
Apart from that, Luke signed with the Sports management company IMG in the year 2003. He has a multi-year contract with Mizuno Corp. in addition, he also has a sponsorship deal with Footjoy who supply his personal shoes and tour sponsorships with Royal Bank of Canada as we as Zurich Insurance. Donald was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2012 Queen’s Birthday Honors List for his services to golf.
